The Radcliffe Arms relaunch celebrates ‘local hero’ after undergoing a transformative £600,000 refurbishment throughout March.
To cut the ribbon and officially reopen the pub, a competition was held across social media to nominate and vote for a Local Hero. Maggie Brooker Hackney, who volunteers for a number of charities, was deservedly recognised for her efforts to get life-saving defibrillator kits installed in and around Hitchin.
As well as being the VIP and ribbon cutter, Maggie also received a voucher from The Radcliffe Arms, awarding her free pizza for a year. Accompanied by family, Maggie perfectly summed up what the renovation has been about. Family and community coming together,

Feedback from the local community played a large part in the renovation planning, with a strong focus on elevating the customer experience. Significant parts of the project include the addition of a garden room with a retractable roof, perfect for summer days, as well as a new interactive darts area. A refreshed interior layout also showcases the relocated pizza oven, taking the dining experience to a new level.
The Radcliffe Arms has long been known locally for its busy calendar of weekly events, food and drink offers, and as a relaxed meeting point for friends, families, and after‑work gatherings. Those popular events and deals have returned, accompanying a brand‑new menu launched upon the pub’s reopening.
Jamie Philcox, General Manager at The Radcliffe Arms, said at the time: “The Radcliffe Arms has always been an important part of the local community. This refurbishment has focused on making the pub even better for our customers. Improving the space and the experience, especially outdoors, while enhancing the character and atmosphere. The project shows real belief in the team, the pub and the community. We’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone back and showing them what we’ve been working on.”
